Famous for their sweetness, Yubari melons, a hybrid of Earl's Favorite and Burpees "Spicy" Cantaloupe melon varieties, are grown exclusively in Yubari in Hokkaido.
Considered the most expensive fruit in the world and grown only in greenhouses, a farmer sold this fruit for $42,450 in 2019. According to these data, 1 kg of Yubari melon can be worth approximately $27,000.
The rich in Japan still show great interest in this fruit, which is as expensive as a car or jewellery.
Only grown in greenhouses and volcanic ash soils, Yubari melons are planted in February and are ready for harvest in about 100 days. It is recommended to consume these melons, which are harvested using scissors with bare hands, within 2-3 days. Although Yubari melons are grown all year round, these melons are still not easy to find in local shops and supermarkets.
