LEDs will save you direct costs due to their higher efficiency than traditional high pressure sodium (HPS) and metal halide (MH) fixtures. High pressure sodium lamps and metal halide lamps draw energy from both light and ballast. For example, a 1000W HPS lamp actually draws more energy than this value.

LED uses only watts. More importantly, it uses fewer watts to produce a higher amount of light than HPS or MHs.

A large part of the energy consumed by HPS and MH lights goes to heat radiation, which are photosynthetically inactive infrared photons. These photons heat up and can overheat plants and the space around them. Fans and HVAC (Heating, ventilation and air conditioning) units prevent this additional heat later on, causing increased electricity costs.

The lower heat output of the LEDs means that the HVAC system does not need to run as hard or as often. Plants also take in less air and therefore require less dehumidification. In this way, savings of up to 56% can be achieved in energy usage.

LEDs do not need to be removed for service/cleaning and most diodes have a lifespan of 50,000 hours .

LEDs that provide less heating than high pressure sodium or metal halides; By reducing evaporation in the greenhouse, it indirectly causes a decrease in water use.
